Senior System Engineer – VMware & Windows Infrastructure
Description: This Senior Systems Engineer position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced infrastructure professional to take ownership of a comprehensive VMware and Windows environment. You’ll work with cutting-edge virtualization technologies, manage enterprise-grade Dell hardware, and play a key role in maintaining mission-critical systems while collaborating with a dedicated IT team in a stable, long-term contract-to-hire opportunity.

– Duration: 6+ months with option to hire (long-term opportunity)
– Location: Piedmont, South Carolina (100% on-site)
– Compensation: Competitive hourly rate starting at $55/hr W2 only (no C2C), rate dependent on experience and skillsets plus benefits
Position Overview
We’re seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Management Information Systems team, reporting to the Manager of IT Infrastructure. This hands-on role focuses on managing our on-premises server environment, ensuring optimal performance, security, and availability across our VMware vSphere virtualization platform, Windows Server infrastructure, and Dell PowerEdge hardware ecosystem.
What You’ll Do
VMware Virtualization Management
– Deploy, configure, and manage VMware vSphere clusters, ESXi hosts, and virtual machines
– Handle VM provisioning, resource allocation, and performance optimization
– Proactively monitor virtual infrastructure health and resolve issues
– Execute VMware patches and upgrades following established change control processes
Windows Server & Active Directory Administration
– Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server operating systems (2019 or newer)
– Manage essential roles including DNS, DHCP, file/print services, and IIS
– Implement security hardening and comprehensive OS patch management
– Deploy and manage Certificate Authority (CA) and certificate-based authentication solutions
– Administer Active Directory user accounts, groups, organizational units, and Group Policy Objects
– Implement AD security best practices and troubleshoot authentication challenges
Backup & Recovery Operations
– Configure and manage Veeam Backup & Replication jobs for both virtual and physical workloads
– Conduct regular restore tests to ensure backup integrity
– Monitor backup job status, resolve failures, and maintain retention policies
Hardware Management & Support
– Rack, cable, and configure Dell PowerEdge servers and related storage hardware
– Perform firmware updates, hardware diagnostics, and component replacements
– Coordinate with Dell support for hardware repairs and warranty management
Documentation & Collaboration
– Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation and knowledge base articles
– Participate in infrastructure projects including expansions, migrations, and upgrades
– Collaborate with network, systems, and application teams on complex cross-functional issues
– Provide expert on-site support for escalated server-related incidents
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
– Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
– 7+ years of hands-on server infrastructure administration experience in enterprise environments
Technical Skills
– Strong hands-on experience managing VMware vSphere (8.0 or newer)
– Proficiency in Windows Server and Active Directory administration and troubleshooting
– Practical experience with Veeam Backup & Replication
– Experience with Dell PowerEdge or similar enterprise server hardware
– Knowledge of SAN/NAS storage and networking fundamentals
– Strong communication and customer service skills with a proactive approach
Preferred Qualifications
Education & Certifications
– Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline
– VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV)
– Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate (AZ-800/801)
– Dell Certified Associate (Server or Storage)
Additional Experience
– Hands-on experience with scripting and automation tools (PowerShell, Python)
– Experience migrating Active Directory and O365 domains
– Knowledge of ITIL frameworks, including change and incident management best practices
– Experience in compliance-driven or regulated environments (HIPAA, SOX, PCI)

Work Environment
